DEEP WINTER

A Retreat with Rising Appalachia

February 15 - 18, 2024

We cordially invite you to join Rising Appalachia and beloved friends for an intimately rowdy immersive retreat of music, art, and workshops at Beyul Retreat in the Colorado Rockies. This three night retreat will feature full band concerts from Rising Appalachia as well as late night dance sets, music writing workshops from the band, morning yoga, skiing and snowshoe opportunities if weather permits, poetry, reflection, outdoor adventure, and more.

Featuring the full cast of Rising Appalachia members (including Chloe), we will be teaching and performing throughout the weekend as well as being joined by Beyul Retreat’s incredible teaching staff.  Throughout your days, you'll have opportunities to craft your own songs, art, meditations, rest and winter wilderness together amidst the aspens with a plentitude of play in the private 32 acres of wild winter wonderland.

In the expansive embodiment of both song and send, this Deep Winter Retreat is for the powder hounds and the lovers of sound. Hosted by Rising Appalachia, and co-created with our dear friends at Beyul, we will expand together in artful convening, sharing with you all what has sweetly shaped and sustained each of us. Come, winter lovers and bowering songbirds, skiiers and yogis, writers and ragers, and join Rising Appalachia and an  Intentionally intimate small group of 50. This is a wonderful opportunity to deep dive with the band as well as hibernate into your own craft of poetics, songwriting, and nature worship.

Come. Be a CATALYST.

RISING APPALACHIA

Leah Song and Chloe Smith, founding sisters of Rising Appalachia, have long witnessed themselves- both by choice and coincidence- carrying harmony into settings of upheaval and discord.  Soon after their eponymous release in 2006, the siblings moved to New Orleans to assist in rebuilding efforts following Katrina.

There they gained not only a deeper sense of connection to the roots of American music, but also an abiding sense of purpose as musicians.  The band, which has now grown to include musicians David Brown on upright bass and baritone guitar, Biko Casini on world percussion, and Duncan Wickel on fiddle and cello, has settled into its stride and purpose through creating original music with a mission rooted in the traditions of folk songs, storytelling, and grassroots activism.  The band manages to meld traditions and genres the same way Leah and Chloe blend their voices; its casual, beguiling, and effortlessly singular.

The band routinely provides a platform for the causes local to the cities they play, and frequently incite their fans to gather with them in converting vacant or under used lots into verdant urban orchards and gardens.

Both onstage and off, Rising Appalachia exudes a sense of rootedness, playful exploration, and inspired action.  Their sound and message, such as revealed in the single "Resilient", suggest that voices and traditions, brought together through song, may be one of the saving graces to a world in distress.  In a time when the fabric of community and culture often appear to be unraveling, their interweaving of music and mission, old traditions with new interpretations, creates an atmosphere of contagious hope and integrity.
